Tariff Codes are an internationally recognised standard which means your product items can easily be identified worldwide by all customs systems, regardless of language barriers.

Every product/item being imported into the UK and EC, must be classified under a commodity code. This code not only identifies what type of item it is but it also advises the rate of import duty and/or VAT which will be due, as well as any restrictions or additional requirements, or if any exemptions, reliefs or quotas are available.

How does it work?

HS codes are made up of four parts. The first two digits refer to the chapter of the HS that covers the product. This describes the industry to which the product belongs, such as textiles or animal products.

There are 98 chapters across 21 sections. The next two digits refer to the HS Heading. Beyond this, the next two numbers cover the HS sub-heading, and the last two to four digits are country or economy specific. It is important to remember that while the first six digits are constant, the remaining two to four may differ. This can cause issues if suppliers in different parts of the world use their own codes, so it's vital firms have systems in place to ensure consistency.

Assigning the wrong classification code to goods can cause a range of issues. These may include non-compliance penalties, border delays or the seizure of the products. Therefore, it is vital you use the right tools to ensure you're following these procedures correctly.

IMEVA Consult will assist you with classifying your goods and ensure compliance with Customs Regulations.
