Customs clearance is a compulsory process for any goods entering or leaving a country. It requires the submission of various export and import documentation, as well as the payment of duties, VAT and any additional costs.
Why should I use a customs agent?
Customs agents are there to facilitate a professional service between HM Customs & Excise and importers/exporters. Our customs specialists have significant understanding of the Customs Rules and Regulations applicable and are well suited to provide assistance and consultations.
Where can you complete UK customs clearance?
We can complete Import UK customs clearance for your shipments at the majority UK Ports.
How long does customs clearance take?
Our aim is to provide a same day customs clearance if the provided customs documentation is complete. However, the customs clearance process can vary from shipment to shipment, and is dependent on what goods are entering the country as certain products may need additional documentation checks, or a physical examination to ensure that declarations are correct.
What supporting customs clearance documentation do I require?
Basic documentation would be:
Shipping document ( Bill of Lading – original or telex)
Supplier’s commercial invoice
Packing list
Copy of the Export Document
Who decides how much import duties and taxes I have to pay?
All goods are classified into commodity codes and the duty and VAT amount vary for each commodity. However, for most products VAT will be applicable at a standard rate of 20%. These will need to be paid before the goods are released for onward transport.
What happens after customs clearance?
We provide you with copies of all documentation completed on your behalf, which have been lodged with HMRC. These documents must be retained on your records for at least 4 years.
I am new to importing in the UK - where to I start?
We recommend that you get an EORI number to start with. We can arrange a consultation to answer your questions and to plan your next steps.
Can customs duties be claimed back?
Import duty can’t be claimed back unless charged incorrectly, but VAT-registered businesses are able to claim VAT back on all of their imports. With VAT accounting for 20% of the entire process cost for UK importers, it makes for a considerable saving. HMRC provides further guidance on how to claim back VAT payments for imports. We can help with Duty repayments.
